Bacon. Look at that word and think about all that it conjures up: deliciousness, salty goodness, ruiner of many a vegetarian. Because now, thanks to the World Health Organisation, you can add cancer to that list. Yep, the WHO has listed bacon as a cause of cancer.
Bacon, sausages, ham and other processed meats now sit alongside cigarettes and asbestos as known carcinogens that cause cancer. The WHO’s International Agency for Research on Cancer invited 22 scientists to look at the link between different types of cancer, including bowel cancer, with eating red and processed meats.
The conclusion was that the WHO "classified consumption of processed meat as ‘carcinogenic to humans’ on the basis of sufficient evidence for colorectal cancer.”
Red meats aren't as bad for you as processed meats though, which now sit in "group 1" of known carcinogens alongside tobacco.
The news has been a long time coming, but now it's been made official—and pretty much everyone is devastated that something as delicious and amazing and bacony as bacon is effectively killing you.
Oh cruel world!
That doesn't mean to say you can't enjoy the odd bit of bacon for breakfast or on your burger (fresh burgers aren't classified as processed meat, btw), but you can't eat it all day everyday like you've been doing.
Here's how the internet reacted to probably the worst news since Sunday's night's The Walking Dead episode.
