The Dogist—Time To Meet Some Of The Hippest And Adorable Dogs From New York City And Beyond

If you're a dog lover and you haven't yet heard of The Dogist, then you're in for a treat. A doggy treat as it were, no not that kind.

The Dogist was started back in 2013 by photographer Elias Weiss, Weiss imagined a kind of dog version of street fashion photo blog the Sartorialist, and initially took photos of dogs in New York City. Weiss has since traveled across the states and the world and visited over 30 cities to take photos of their dogs too.

But he's mainly based in NYC where he photographs the great and the good, the canines he sees strutting on the sidewalk that impressive him enough to want to snap them. He then posts the results to his Instagram @thedogist and also collated the best ones into a book, which came out last year.

Weiss also had a short doc made about him recently (see video above) and is close to hitting two million followers on Instagram, so he must be doing something right.

If you're wondering how he picks what dogs to photograph, in case say you wanted your own mutt to appear on his page, the Guardian explains:

In a city teeming with dogs, he chooses to photograph dogs that stand out to him in some way – say, an interesting fur marking or a silly outfit. He logs each dog’s name, breed and age in his phone with a voice memo – Simon, norwich terrier, two – and doesn’t post a photo at the time he takes it in an attempt to stagger dog breeds and moods. And though he visits shelters often to take photos of adoptable dogs, he’ll never post them all at once, lest people get “compassion fatigue”.

Check out some of the dogs below and head to The Dogist for many, many more.

Simon, Chihuahua mix (15 y/o), Times Square, New York, NY • "All his teeth are gone, but he's super healthy otherwise. He's attached to me like we've been together our whole lives. He's needy for love. Susie, our other dog, is fine and comfortable, but she's not looking her best for the camera." @susiesseniordogs

Brody, Morkie (8 y/o), 44th & 10th Ave., New York, NY • "He likes to be fed with a spoon. He's a baby."

Bailey, Yorkshire Terrier (7 y/o), 83rd & Columbus Ave., New York, NY • "When he gets really excited, he starts sneezing and smiling."

Bear, Cavalier King Charles Spaniel (6 y/o), Central Park, New York, NY • "We were cuddling him on the couch, and the remote fell on him, so he hid under the couch. Now he's scared of electronics."

Florence, Dachshund (6 m/o), 18th & 3rd Ave., New York, NY • "She just got spayed – that's why she's wearing the pink thing. She sleeps in bed with my girlfriend and me, and insists on sleeping in the middle. I usually wake up spooning her instead of my girlfriend."

Zorro, mix (7 y/o), Tompkins Square Park, New York, NY • "He was adopted from an orange orchard on the coast of Spain seven years ago, when we lived there. We moved to New York four years ago, and are about to move to Atlanta, GA. He's an old soul, and his favorite place in the house, since we had our son, is the closet. He's weird." #zorrofrayser

Butch, American Bulldog/Boxer mix (6 y/o), Riverside Park, New York, NY • "He thinks he's a tiny lap dog." @butch_the_americanbullieboxer

Meeko, Alaskan Klee Kai (2 y/o), 15th & 2nd Ave., New York, NY • "He talks a lot."

Jake, Irish Setter (10 y/o), 7th & Ave. A, New York, NY • "He carries my socks and underwear around my apartment, and likes to walk himself sometimes. My dad's in the hospital right now – I think seeing Jake's picture will make him happy."

Tiny, Pit Bull (6 y/o), Central Park, New York, NY • "She likes meeting new people and exploring NYC by skateboard."

Madison, Italian Greyhound (8 y/o), 9th & 3rd Ave, New York, NY • "She's a cancer survivor."

Gavin, Pembroke Welsh Corgi (3 y/o), Central Park, New York, NY

Nipo, Spanish Water Dog (4 y/o), AKC Meet the Breeds, New York, NY • "He herds ducks. He loves ducks."

Apollo, Terrier mix (1 y/o), N 7th & Bedford Ave., Brooklyn, NY • "The glasses are just part of his personality. When he was a puppy, the snow was blinding to him, so as a joke, we gave him sunglasses. It became his thing." @apollotheterrier #trix400film

Buddy, Akita (9 y/o), S 3rd & Wythe Ave., Brooklyn, NY • "He's the mayor of this area, but he's camera shy. Whenever a camera comes out, he knows he's not getting pet." #portra800film

Zulu, Newfoundland (4 y/o), 18th & Broadway, New York, NY • "He does this huge growl-yawn when he knows we're about to go out."

Charlie, English Bulldog (4 m/o), Washington Square Park, New York, NY • "He's really scared of my stepladder. Nothing else."

Jimi, Dachshund (12 y/o), American Ballet Theatre, New York, NY • "He has a Napoleon complex and he likes to hump. He's been humping since I got him." #dogsofabt

Ruffy, Afghan Hound, #WKCDogShow, New York, NY • "She's wearing a snood. Afghan Hounds have long, furry ears, and when they go down to drink water, it keeps their ears from getting wet."
